Everything You Need to Know About Waxing Aftercare

Your skin does everything in its power to take care of you. Isn’t it only fair that we do the same? Knowing your skin care routine is one thing, but making sure you know how to take care of your skin for waxing aftercare is an essential part of the waxing process. It doesn’t matter if it’s brazilian waxing or arm waxing, keep this article as reference of care tips so you know exactly what to do after getting waxed to take care of your skin.

Why is waxing aftercare necessary?

People tend to question whether waxing aftercare is actually as important as estheticians claim it to be. The truth is, without the proper waxing aftercare, you risk ingrowns, a longer period of irritation, and at worst, infection.

Waxing aftercare is crucial in avoiding prolonged irritation or side effects

Some people describe waxing as a walk in the park. And while it’s definitely not painful, it’s also not the most comfortable when it comes to hair removal processes. As a result, sometimes your skin may be a little tender, red and irritated after a wax session–especially if you ignore aftercare steps. The steps you take during waxing aftercare can either contribute to prolonged irritation and side effects like a burning sensation, or instant glow and glory.

Ingrown hairs can be avoided with waxing aftercare

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s the absolute truth that ingrown hairs are evil. But waxing, among other things, is the perfect opportunity to prevent ingrown hairs, as it’s considered a natural, deep exfoliant. All it requires is a little intentionality in the way you go about your waxing aftercare.

What you should be doing during waxing aftercare

Waxing aftercare is very much a part of your whole waxing experience. It is an extension of your wax appointment, so the serious nature in which you practice everything you do prior to your waxing service should be applied after your waxing appointment, too!

Moisturizing is very important to waxing aftercare

Moisturizing is essential to post wax care. It helps to suck in and lock the moisture for those body hairs to grow easily out of each hair follicle. With dry, dehydrated skin, each hair is more likely to get stuck, or grow back into the skin once it emerges.

Waxing aftercare routines need to include exfoliation

Even though waxing itself is a form of exfoliation, making sure to include regular exfoliation after your wax appointment is key. So whether you exfoliate with a scrub, volcanic rock or dry brushing, sticking with that routine after your wax appointment will help keep dead skin from building up on your skin's surface. Make sure you exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week, starting 48 hours after your wax.

See if aloe vera is a suitable option for you after waxing

Aloe vera is a miracle healer, used for everything from cuts to burns and beyond. So it should come as no surprise that a little bit of aloe vera application after your appointment is a good call. Aloe vera is chock full of vitamin C, E and beta-carotene; all properties that help the skin stay healthy and happy. Plus, aloe vera has antimicrobial properties that help keep inflammation low.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes for waxing aftercare

Be sure to wear clothing that fits loosely and comfortably for waxing aftercare. Your skin needs to breathe after its pores are opened up after waxing. Wearing tight fitting clothing can create heat and friction, the perfect combination for information, irritation, and even acne.

Habits to avoid during waxing aftercare

After your wax session, you can guarantee your skin some peace and quiet by following a few simple guidelines. Being mindful of your post wax habits can actually secure a safe, healthy repertoire to rely on after each appointment.

Do not expose the waxed area to the sun

Waxing is as exhilarating as it is freeing. And as much as you’d love to hop in the car and head out for a sunny beach day the day after your appointment, you’ll need to wait at least 48 hours after your wax appointment before exposing the area to direct sunlight.

Avoid using the razor at all costs

As your skin begins to heal, skip out on using a razor for any touch ups. Not only will this interrupt your hair growth cycle, but it can also create further irritation on a freshly waxed area that’s already highly sensitive–and especially for those with hyper sensitive skin.

Do not irritate the freshly waxed area

Even if you have an exfoliating mask you'd like to use on your freshly waxed area, you’ll need to skip out on anything that irritates the skin for at least 48 hours. It’s not worth the risk, and with your skin so tender right after your wax appointment, the last thing you want to do is cause any further irritation.

Physical activity should be put on hold during waxing aftercare

In addition to wearing loose fitting clothes, you’ll need to hold off on physical activity for 24-48 hours after your appointment. Whether you got a Brazilian wax, a bikini wax, or an underarm wax, all of those areas are prime real estate for serious irritation if sweat build up begins to seep into your pores. Dealing with acne on top of inflamed and tender skin is not ideal!
